First responders were dispatched to the northbound lanes of I-5 north of the Northwest Avenue interchange about 12:50am on Sunday, October 29th, due to reports of a serious injury rollover crash.
Initial radioed reports from the scene said there were 2 patients on the ground.
Washington State Patrol (WSP) issued a press memo stating their preliminary investigation determined that a red 2005 Ford F150 pickup truck was northbound on I-5 when it drifted to the left and struck the cable barrier in the median. The Ford rolled and came to rest blocking the northbound lanes.
The Ford was driven by an 18-year-old Bellingham woman and occupied by 5 others, ages 15 through 18 years.
4 of the 6 occupants were transported from the scene to PeaceHealth St Joseph’s Medical Center by aid crews and a 15-year-old was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. 1 was said have been uninjured. 5 of the 6 occupants were determined to have been wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. It was unknown if the 6th had been wearing theirs.
Drugs and/or alcohol were determined to have been involved in cause of the crash. The cause remained under investigation by WSP.
Both northbound lanes of I-5 were reportedly closed until nearly 6am with traffic being diverted off I-5 at the Northwest Avenue interchange.
